At least 10 passengers were injured after a private bus hit a government bus from behind near the Owl More crossing, opposite Eco Park in northeast Kolkata, on Thursday.

The injured were treated at a private hospital off the Bypass, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said.

“Both the buses were moving at high speed. The driver of the government bus hit the brakes hard after he spotted the signal near the Owl More crossing turn red. The driver of the private bus failed to stop and rammed into the government bus from behind,” said the officer.

According to a traffic policeman who was on duty at the crossing, of the ten injured passengers, at least eight were left with cuts and bruises.

“Three passengers of the government bus complained of severe waist pain and backache. The injured were taken to a private hospital near Chinar Park,” he said.

Both the buses have been seized. The government bus plies from Joka to Barasat while the private bus plies from the Sukhobrishti bus stand to Alampur, police said.

Statistics show that buses — both government and private — are one of the major contributors to accidents in the city. The tendency to pick up and drop passengers in the middle of the road, reckless driving and racing with buses of the same route cause accidents, the police said.
