A woman was duped online by a telecaller who said she needed to click on a link to redeem Rs 2,000 on her e-wallet. The woman lost Rs 8,800.
Shamsur Nihar, a resident of Satyen Roy Road in south-west Kolkata’s Behala, has reported to the police that she received a call from an unknown number on Saturday. The caller introduced himself as a representative of the customer care centre of an e-wallet she subscribes to.
“The caller told her she had Rs 2,000 in her e-wallet as part of a cashback offer. To get the money, the caller said, she needed to use net banking and transfer the money from her e-wallet to her bank account,” said an officer.
Nihar had initially suspected that the man was lying. But he managed to dispel her doubts by convincing her that he was aware of all the transactions she had made through the wallet.
“Once convinced, she agreed to click on a link sent to her phone. Immediately, she received multiple text messages from her bank informing her that money had been debited from her account. Rs 8,800 was withdrawn from her account in a couple of minutes through four transactions,” the officer said.
No one was arrested till Sunday evening.
