Two persons, including a 14-year-old girl, died of dengue in the city on Wednesday, officials and doctors at the hospitals where they were admitted said.
Bhargabi Mondal, the teenager, died at MR Bangur Hospital late on Wednesday. “She was admitted to the hospital on Monday. She died of dengue shock syndrome,” said an official of the hospital.
Bhargabi was from Kasba’s Haltu, Ward 105 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in south Kolkata. In the adjoining ward, 106 (Kayasthapara), mayor Firhad Hakim undertook a dengue awareness walk on Thursday.
“We have been trying our best to fight the menace. I’m not sure how this death happened,” said Sushila Mondal, councillor of Ward 105.
Bhargabi, a Class VIII student, complained of a severe headache on Thursday while returning from her tuition class. Later that night, she was down with high fever. A couple of days later she tested positive for dengue.
Neighbours said the girl was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital on Sunday night as her temperature kept soaring and she started suffering from complications.
A 53-year-old resident of Hooghly's Uttarpara died at a Kolkata hospital on Wednesday night. Swapan Ghosh had been down with fever since November 4. On Monday, he was shifted from a nursing home in Uttarpara to a private hospital in Alipore.
Doctors said he was admitted to the ICCU and later put on a ventilator. Ghosh passed away on Wednesday night.
The death certificate mentions dengue and multi-organ failure as the cause of death.
