Two candidates of the Combined Medical Service Examination — an all-India test by the UPSC — and their fathers were injured after a portion of a sunshade collapsed on them from the third floor of a building in the central business district on Sunday afternoon.
The accident happened when the group was waiting at the crossing of AJC Bose Road and Lord Sinha Road for the commencement of the second half of the exams.
The injured were Baishali Bhowmick, 25, and her father Santanu Bhowmick, 62, and Moumita Sanyal, 25, and her father Ashoke Sanyal, 50.
The Bhowmicks are from Santoshpur and the Sanyals are from Darjipara in Jalpaiguri. “All four suffered head and shoulder injuries. They have been admitted to SSKM Hospital,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station. The police said their condition was stable.
“The two examinees had appeared in the first half of the exams at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girl’s High School but could appear in the second because of the accident,” said an officer.
The police said a chunk of concrete fell from the third floor of the building where some repair work was going on, following which the sunshade just above the students and their fathers collapsed.
