Family members of Subir Chaki said on Thursday they might hire a lawyer to ensure that Mithu Halder and son Vicky, two key accused in the murder of the 61-year-old, get the maximum punishment.
Mainak Chaki, a cousin of the victim, said several family members had proposed retaining a lawyer to oppose any bail petition filed by the alleged perpetrators of the crime and plead for their maximum punishment.
Mainak said they were happy with the way the investigation was being conducted.
“The way officers tracked down Mithu Halder is praiseworthy. They have been very sensitive towards all family members. We just hope that the others involved in the crime, including Mithu Halder’s son, get arrested,” Mainak said.
Chaki lived at Uniworld City in New Town with his mother and wife. His son stays in London and daughter in Bangalore.
Chaki, managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd, was found murdered at his ancestral house on Kankulia Road, off Golpark, which he had been trying to sell for more than a year.
The police said Vicky and his associates murdered Chaki and his driver while trying to rob cash and other valuables from the house. Mithu was allegedly waiting outside the house.
Vicky had allegedly gone to the house posing as a prospective buyer.
According to Mainak, none in Chaki’s family knew Mithu or any of her family members.
“We have no clue who these people are. We as a family are still to get over the shock and cannot believe that someone could kill a man like my brother in cold blood…. We want justice and will seek maximum punishment for everyone involved in the heinous crime,” he said.
Neighbours said they were happy that the police had arrested one of the alleged culprits.
“Subirda was popular among us. We’ll not get him back but the only solace is that the culprits have been identified and one of them has been caught,” said Anjan Sen, secretary of the Kolkata Uniworld City Residents’ Association.
