Several parts of the city and its nearby areas received a spell of heavy rain on Wednesday evening, leading to waterlogging and choking of traffic.
But the rain, which followed a couple of days of heat and humidity, was not uniform.
According to figures from the pumping stations of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, between 4pm and 6pm, Maniktala received around 65mm of rain and Thanthania got 66mm. During the same period, Ballygunge got 5mm and Kalighat 7mm.
The showers led to waterlogging on Chittaranjan Avenue, MG Road, Kiran Shankar Roy Road and Strand Road, affecting the rush-hour evening traffic.
Cars crawled on these thoroughfares long after the showers abated. Mohun Bagan Row and Fariapukur were waterlogged till late evening.
The Met office attributed the showers to local thunderclouds.
“Till now, the southwesterly winds were quite strong. But in the absence of a system over the Bay, the moist winds got a free access to rise towards north Bengal. But from Wednesday, the southwesterly winds have started losing some intensity. As a result, some convergence is happening in south Bengal,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.
In Kolkata, similar spells are not ruled out over the next couple of days, said Das.
The weather in north Bengal and Sikkim, currently battered by heavy rain, is likely to improve from Thursday, he said.
The withdrawal of monsoon has been pushed back by at least a week because of the current spell of showers, said a Met official.
