Smoke coming out of the undercarriage of a train at Rabindra Sadan station briefly disrupted the Metro service on Friday afternoon.
The smoke was first spotted at 12.23pm when the New Garia-bound train was standing at Rabindra Sadan station, said a Metro official.
The train was reasonably full and a section of passengers started panicking.
After an initial examination by the motorman and station officials, the passengers were asked to get off the train. The empty rake left the station for the car shed at New Garia at 12.31pm, said the Metro official.
“As a precautionary measure, the rake was evacuated and sent to the Kavi Subhash car shed,” said the Metro spokesperson.
Old rakes spewing smoke from the undercarriage, triggering disruptions in the service, was a common problem for the carrier until recently.
But now, the carrier has an all-AC fleet of 28 trains. More than a dozen trains were made at the Integral Coach Factory near Chennai and are called Medha rakes. The remaining are older and of BHEL make. The newer trains now outnumber the older ones.
The train that spewed smoke on Friday was a Medha rake.
“A detailed examination will reveal the cause,” said a Metro official.
