Six men, all tailor by profession, who were travelling in a Tata Ace with bundles of fabric were injured when the vehicle overturned on Vidyasagar Setu on Sunday afternoon.

Police said three of the passengers have been admitted to SSKM Hospital. The condition of at least one is critical.

“All six men are from Bakultala in South 24-Parganas. They had gone to Bankra in Howrah for some tailoring-related work and were returning home through the Kolkata-bound flank of Vidyasagar Setu when the accident happened around 3.30pm. All six were flung on the bridge,” said an officer of Hastings police station.

Nizamuddin Mollah, 36, suffered serious head injuries, the police said. The two others who have been admitted to SSKM are Arif Baidya, 20, and Hassanur Mollah, 40.

“Nizamuddin is in the red zone of SSKM Hospital, where patients with critical injuries are admitted,” the officer said.

Traffic on the city-bound flank of Vidyasagar Setu was disrupted for around 15 minutes as bundles of fabric remained strewn on the road.

An officer in the traffic department said the Tata Ace had been seized and the driver arrested.

“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of speeding. The seized vehicle will be sent for a mechanical examination to ascertain whether it had developed some technical snag,” said the officer.

Hundreds of vehicles ply along Vidyasagar Setu, of which many tend to speed, often resulting in accidents.

The Sunday afternoon accident happened on the landing of Vidyasagar Setu. “The consequences would have been far more serious had there been another vehicle near the Tata Ace when it overturned,” said an officer of the Vidyasagar traffic guard.
