A 37-year-old man was found with multiple injuries in Panchhannagram off EM Bypass in Tiljala around 9.30am on Saturday.
Mitendra Paswan, a worker at a local shoe manufacturing company, died shortly after some of his family members reached the spot, police said.
Officers from the detective department of the Kolkata police and the local police station have drawn up a murder case at the Tiljala police station.
The injury marks on his back and legs suggest he was hit by a blunt object, an officer said.
“Paswan hailed from Aurangabad in Bihar and has been living in Tiljala for several years with his family. He had a wife and two kids,” said a senior police officer.
His family members have told the police that he had stepped out of the house around 7am on Saturday. They said they noticed nothing amiss about his actions and he had gone about his daily chores.
Around 9.30am, some residents of the area in Tiljala where Paswan stayed spotted him lying with blood on his face and legs near an autorickshaw stand in Panchannagram and raised an alarm.
Paswan’s sister-in-law, who resided with him, was informed. She reached the spot and soon after she offered Paswan water, he died, the police said.
He was declared dead at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
“We have questioned the owner of the shoemaking unit and others in connection with the case. There are some strands unknown to us,” an officer said.
Paswan’s body was sent for post-mortem. Officers said the report will help establish information they have gathered about the possible weapons used to hit the victim.
Metro work stalled
The construction of an underground ventilation shaft for East-West Metro between Seladah and Esplanade has been put on hold for fear of another subsidence, said officials.
“Despite continuous grouting efforts, the soil condition is not up to the mark. We don’t want to risk another accident. The work is on hold untill we devise an solution,” said an official of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, the implementing agency of the East-West corridor, which, once complete, will connect Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V.
The project has already been delayed by multiple soil subsidences, most recently on October 14.
