Seven men were arrested on Saturday night for alleged black marketing of tickets for the India-New Zealand T20 match at the Eden Gardens.

Police said the accused were selling tickets worth Rs 650 at over Rs 2,000.

Based on a tip-off about the black marketing, the police raided some locations in the Maidan area around the Eden Gardens before zeroing in on the men, a police officer said.

The police said 60 tickets for Sunday’s match were seized from the accused men.

This was not the first time people have been caught black marketing cricket match tickets outside the Eden Gardens before a match is scheduled in the city.

Black marketeers often purchase tickets in bulk using multiple identity cards and then sell them outside the stadium at a higher price, said the police.

“It is always advisable to purchase tickets either online through the website or directly from the ticket counter. There have been cases where people who purchased tickets at a higher price than the original cost have been given false fabricated tickets,” said an officer in Lalbazar.

The seven have been booked under sections of cheating and extortion by officers of the Maidan police station.

Senior officers said plain clothes policemen have been posted inside and out-side the Eden Gardens to keep a check on such illegal sale of tickets on Sunday, the day of the match.
