A sergeant of Jadavpur traffic guard was allegedly beaten up by a group of youths on Sonarpur Kheya-dah Road on Friday when he was returning from duty.

Raja Roy was riding his two-wheeler when a dog accidentally came in his way and he hit the animal before falling off the vehicle after losing balance. The incident took place around 11.30pm on Friday.

In his complaint with Sonarpur police Roy said some youths who were standing near the spot immediately sprang on him and attacked him for hitting the dog. “They were in an inebriated state.”

Roy said he ran 500 metres with the youths chasing him and managed to take a rickshaw and flee the spot.

After reaching a place close to Sonarpur station, Roy informed his officer-in-charge about the alleged attack. Next he called up the local police station. “A team reached the spot after I insisted.”

Police said they have arrested one person.

A search for other members of the group was on, though till Saturday evening no one else was arrested.
