A 32-year-old man riding a scooter died after the two-wheeler collided with a car while trying to avoid hitting a cycle on Naktala Road on the southern fringes of Kolkata on Tuesday morning.
The car fled, police said.
Scooterist Ajit Singh, a resident of Baishnabghata Patuli, was wearing a helmet.
He was declared dead at Baghajatin State General Hospital.
Singh used to work at a private firm, the police have learnt.
The police said Singh was trying to avert a collision with a cycle on NSC Road and swerved right when he came in front of the car that hit him.
“There are no CCTV cameras of the traffic department at that spot. We are examining footage from CCTV cameras at nearby shops to identify the car,” said an officer of the fatal squad of the traffic police.
People in the area have told cops that the car was moving at a high speed and allegedly did not stop when the scooter came in its way.
Netaji Nagar police station has started a case under IPC sections related to causing death due to negligence against an unknown vehicle.
The accident happened around 10.10am, when the stretch remains busy.
Autos ply through the stretch that connects Tollygunge with the southern fringes of Kolkata.
The movement of slow-moving vehicles, including cycles and rickshaws, make the stretch congested.
Although bicycles are restricted on most thoroughfares in the city or allowed only in certain periods, the police have been taking a soft stance on cyclists during the pandemic.
Hundreds of Kolkatans, who do not want to travel in crowded public vehicles or lack other means to travel in the absence of local trains, have been depending on bicycles for commuting to their workplace and back home during the pandemic.
