A man in his late 30s was arrested on Thursday for allegedly duping two men out of more than Rs 40 lakh by luring them with the promise of high returns on their investments by liking videos on the Internet and installing a trading app on their phones.

Police said Ahonkar Roy, who hails from Shaktigarh in Burdwan, was arrested from a budget hotel in New Town.

An officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate said they had received two separate complaints at Salt Lake cyber crime police station in April and May.

Both complaints were similar in nature where the victims had received messages on an app that promised huge earnings.

The messages asked the victims to first like videos on the Internet. They were also asked to share their bank account details where they received some money after they liked the videos. “Then Roy messaged them to install a trading app that promised to double their investment,” said the officer.

Both the victims downloaded the app on their smartphones. “Roy then siphoned off Rs 19.87 lakh from one of their accounts and Rs 28 lakh from another,” said the officer.

After Roy stopped communicating with them, the men approached the cops. “We started a probe and zeroed in on Roy,” said the officer.
