A rowing boat toppled in Rabindra Sarobar on Saturday morning.
A 65-year-old rower, who was on the boat, held on to the vessel, as any experienced rower would do. Within a minute, a petrol-powered rescue boat reached the spot and rescued the rower.
On May 21, two teenage rowers drowned in the lake after their boat toppled during a storm. Rowing, suspended for over five months since the accident, has resumed recently in the lake.
A rescue boat with a lifesaver always patrols the Sarorbar now.
Several rowers have said that toppling of boats is a normal thing during rowing. The rower on the boat on Saturday also said the same thing.
“I lost balance and the boat toppled around 7.30 am. But it is a normal thing. I held on to the boat. A rescue boat arrived in less than a minute,” said Sunil Sethia.
Rowers are taught to cling on to any part of the boat. The boats do not sink. Sethia, a resident of Loudon Street, is a member of Bengal Rowing Club and rows almost every day in the Sarobar.
