A Honda City with four persons lost track of the road and fell into an overflowing pond off EM Bypass on Monday night.
The vehicle sank but the four occupants managed to come out unhurt, police said.
The accident happened off Fortis Hospital around 10pm when three men and a woman were heading from one restaurant to another on EM Bypass in the car, the police said.
“The four had left a bar near Science City and were heading for a restaurant a few kilometres away. The car took a left turn to travel down the service road. After that, instead of turning right to hit the service road, the car went straight ahead and accidentally entered an overflowing pond,” said an officer of the traffic police.
The pond has a railing around it but the car went straight to the unfenced stairs leading to the water, an eyewitness said.
“There was water everywhere and it was still raining. It appeared the person at the wheel lost control and the car went straight into the water. The pond was overflowing and it was difficult to tell it from the road,” said a resident of the locality.
Just when the car started slipping into the pond, the three men and the woman opened the doors and jumped out. The car sank deeper and disappeared in a couple of minutes.
The police identified the occupants as Akash Roy, Rahul Gupta, Vicky Choudhary and Puja Thapa.
Most of them are residents of Dum Dum.
The Honda City was pulled out of the water with a crane around 4.30am on Tuesday.
Residents said the stretch was usually dark after sunset and called for installation of more street lights.
“We need more lights in the area for the safety of the people here. This could have happened to any of the residents,” said a homemaker.
An officer in the traffic department urged people to drive slowly amidst rain.
“The occupants were lucky they could come out unharmed. Had the car been moving faster, they might have found it difficult to come out,” the officer said.
