Treated water from at least two sewage treatment plants in New Town will be used to water plants on median dividers of the township and in parts of Eco Park, an official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said.

The treated water will be recycled and used to water median-divider plantations across New Town using a network of pipelines from the plants — one located in Action Area I and another in Action Area II.

The plants and shrubbery on the median dividers along the Major Arterial Road (MAR) and a section of the Eco Park will be watered using the treated water.

“The network of pipelines and pumps are already in place. We will conduct a trial run before making the system operational,” said a senior NKDA official.

The plants and shrubs on the dividers and in Eco Park will be watered twice daily.

At present, like in other parts of the city, the median divider plantation and parks are watered using water transported by trucks and minitrucks.

According to the official, more than 10,000 litre of water is used for maintaining the landscape and plantations in New Town every day. Once the new system is put in place, the amount will come down by around 30 per cent.

“This in turn will also help bring air pollution levels down as most of the vehicles used to water the plantations run on diesel,” the official added.

NKDA chairman Debashis Sen said the water treated at the sewage treatment plants had parameters that were well within the limits of their release back into the environment.
