A realtor was arrested on Saturday for allegedly forging documents of a plot in Salt Lake that belonged to a man who died 25 years ago and registering the property in his name.

Siddhartha Nag allegedly forged documents related to the ownership of BA 69 in Salt Lake Sector I and “transferred” it to himself by forging the signature of the owner.

The alleged fraud was spotted by a relative of the deceased, who came to know that the building that stood on BA 69 had been razed.

“The plot belonged to Prithwish Chandra Basu. His nephew recently saw that his maternal uncle’s home had been demolished and in its place a new building was coming up,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.

The nephew went to the office of the registrar of assurances to find out ownership details of the property and learned that his uncle, who had passed away 25 years ago, had apparently sold the land to Nag last year.

The nephew reported the matter to the Bidhannagar police.

The police apparently learned during the investigation that Basu’s signature on the property document submitted at the registration office was forged.
