Clouds and rain on Thursday brought relief from the sultry weather that Kolkatans had been subjected to for the past several days.

The change in weather was attributed to a trough of low pressure between Bihar and Odisha.

“Murshidabad, Nadia, Burdwan and North and South 24-Parganas are on the eastern side of the trough. They have witnessed generous cloud formation. Some of the clouds have made their way to Kolkata,” said a Met official.

Several parts of the city experienced a drizzle in the morning.

Around 1pm, the sky looked like it does in the evening. The Met office in Alipore recorded around 22mm of rain till 8.30pm. But the intensity of the showers kept increasing as the night progressed.

The maximum temperature on Thursday was 33.8 degrees, down from 34.5 degrees on Wednesday and 35 degrees the day before.

“The clouds are going to persist on Friday as well, though the sky is unlikely to be as grey as it was on Thursday. The temperature will also be under check, around 32-33 degrees,” said the Met official. But the relief will be temporary, he said.

The monsoon trough is still on the foothills of the Himalayas.

A low-pressure off the Andhra coast might drag it down in the next couple of days. But the absence of any system closer to Bengal means there is little chance of heavy rain in Kolkata over the next few days, said the Met official.
