A new stormwater drainage pumping station was inaugurated near Bangur Avenue on Saturday.

The station will help drain out rainwater from places like Lake Town and Bangur into the Kestopur canal, an official of the South Dum Dum Municipality said.

Lake Town and Bangur have had a long-standing waterlogging problem. Several localities go under even after a light spell of rain.

The pumping station has been built by the urban development department at a cost of around Rs 22 crore.

Equipped with high-powered pumps, the station can drain out 0.33 cubic metre of water per second when operated at its optimal level.

According to a senior official of the South Dum Dum Municipality, the saucer-like shape of Bangur and parts of Lake Town makes it difficult for rainwater to drain normally.

“A network of pipelines and gully pits has also been built that will act as catchment areas for the rainwater before they are pumped out into the Kestopur canal,” the official added.
