A team from Kolkata police visited Rajabazar Science College in north Kolkata on Wednesday to probe a letter sent to Calcutta University vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarty Bandyopadhyay, saying her husband would be killed.
The VC’s husband, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, is a former chief secretary of Bengal.
Police said their preliminary inquiry suggested that the letter was apparently not sent by the person whose name was mentioned as the sender.
“There is a lab attendant in the chemical technology department of Rajabazar Science College by the name mentioned in the letter as the sender. Till now, we have not found any evidence to suggest that the letter was sent by him,” said an officer investigating the matter.
The police started a case after receiving the complaint from Chakravarty Bandyopadhyay on October 26.
After the purported sender’s name it was written “C/o Dr Mahua Ghosh, Dept. of Chemical Technology, Rajabazar Science College, 92, APC Road, Kolkata – 700009”.
Ghosh is the head of the department of chemical technology.
When this newspaper contacted her, she said: “This is extremely shocking and embarrassing for me. I have no idea why I have been targeted like this. I hope the law agencies find out who has done this mischief. This has come like a bolt from the blue.”
Investigators said they had formally sought permission from the Rajabazar college authorities to scan their records.
“The next step would be to identify the post office where the letter had been posted. We hope to get clues about the sender from the post office or the GPO,” said an officer.
