A man, who had gone to Girish Park police station with a bandage on his head to report a robbery at his office, has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold bars and then feigning the heist.

Nitish Roy, 29, who lives on Nayapatty Road in northeast Kolkata’s Dum Dum and works for an Odisha-based jeweller, was in charge of the jeweller’s local office in Kolkata.

On Monday afternoon, Roy went to Girish Park police station to report that two men had come to his office at Avasan Singhi Bagan, hit him with the butt of a gun and robbed seven gold bars worth around Rs 80 lakh.

“Based on his statement, we went to the spot and checked CCTV footage. We found that two men had come to his office in a taxi and left with a bag,” said an officer of Girish Park police station.

However, while studying the CCTV footage the cops spotted something unusual. “A few minutes after the taxi left, we saw Roy coming out of the building with no head injury on his head. He then went inside and came out again with an injury,” the officer added.

On interrogation, Roy confessed that he hatched the plan to steal the gold, which belonged to his employer, with his younger brother Nitin.

“Roy had asked Nitin to come to his office on Monday with another man,” said the officer.

After the men left the building with the gold, Roy allegedly hit himself and caused an injury to his head.

Based on Roy’s statement, the police rounded up Nitin from their home in Dum Dum. They recovered the gold from an abandoned location in Kundu Lane in Ultadanga on Tuesday morning.

The police said, the third person, who accompanied Nitin in the taxi, was yet to be apprehended.
