Baidyanath Chakravarty, one of the pioneers of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) in India, passed away at a private hospital in Salt Lake on Friday. He was 94.
Chakravarty was admitted to the hospital in March with several critical ailments, doctors said.
In 2019, the Bengal government had awarded Chakravarty a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the world of reproductive medicine.
On Friday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences saying Chakravarty’s death would cause an irreparable loss to the world of medicine and research.
His Institute of Reproductive Medicine has helped innumerable childless couples become parents, Mamata said.
Chakravarty later donated the Institute of Reproductive Medicine, set up in 1986, to the Indian Council for Medical Research to ensure that the research he had started in 1965 was not interrupted.
