Sixteen long-distance trains originate from and 17 terminate at Shalimar station, around 10km from Kolkata.

Just outside the station complex is a parking lot for two-wheelers and cars. There is another parking lot around an autorickshaw stand to accommodate those who may not find space in the other lot.

Police said Meeraj and his brother had reached Shalimar station in their car from Uttarpara in Hooghly to receive their parents, who were returning from Patna.

After reaching the station, the brothers paused near the car parking lot around the autorickshaw stand, trying to figure out the entry and exit gates of the station.

One of the brothers then spotted his parents waiting outside with their luggage.

Meeraj drove ahead and picked up their parents. The family was moving out in the car when two youths stopped them and demanded the parking fee.

The police said the youths demanded Rs 48 as parking fee. When the brothers asked why, a few others joined in and an altercation followed.

“Meerja's brother Shuvam has said around 10 youths attacked them when the two refused to pay the parking fee,” said a senior officer of Botanical Garden police station.

“The gang rained blows on their face and arms, and left them with bleeding injuries. Shuvam suffered a fracture in his right arm,” the officer said.

As the attack continued, GRP officers and their counterparts in Howrah police reached the spot and rescued the brothers.

They were then taken to South Howrah State General Hospital.

Later, the brothers lodged a complaint with the police. Officers said an investigation had been ordered.

Till late in the evening, the police said six youths were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack on the brothers.
