The drainage system of Parama flyover will be overhauled to ensure the carriageway is free of waterlogging this monsoon.

The urban development department has decided that the broken drainage pipes will be replaced along the entire length of the flyover, spanning 7.5 kilometres between AJC Bose Road flyover in the west and EM Bypass in the east.

Engineers from Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), which maintains the flyover, will oversee the work which will begin shortly.

“The process of selection through a tender process has been completed and a company that specialises in such jobs will start the work of replaying drainage pipes shortly,” said a senior KMDA official.

“A team of engineers will oversee the entire work. Drainage of water is vital for the longevity of the structure,” the official said.

Waterlogging on Parama flyover has continued to dog motorists every monsoon with water refusing to drain out of the pits located along the shoulders of the carriageway. In some stretches the water would drain very slowly prompting motorists, particularly those on two-wheelers, to skirt around those pockets.

A spell of heavy showers would slow down traffic along both flanks resulting in snarls on the flyover, police said.
