A 36-year-old man from Hooghly’s Serampore was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly cheating a youth of Rs 1 lakh with a promise of a job in the state irrigation department.

Sujoy Bhaduri was arrested after the youth from Howrah lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar North police station earlier this month.

“Bhaduri told him that he could get a job in the irrigation department but he had to pay Rs 1 lakh,” said the officer.

Soon after receiving the amount Bhaduri stopped taking the youth’s calls. That made him suspicious.

The youth then visited the office of the irrigation department where he was informed that no money was required to apply for a job there and no recruitment drive was on.
