A 20-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to break an ATM on Chittaranjan Avenue in central Kolkata on Sunday morning.

Officers scanned CCTV footage from the ATM after the break-in attempt came to light. They zeroed in on Mohammad Sahil after collecting information from residents of Kelabagan in Jorasanko on Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Sahil was rounded up from the crossing of Colootola Street and Chittaranjan Avenue on Monday. Officers believe he had gone to the ATM to collect some quick cash but lacked the expertise to break the vault. “Sahil was arrested earlier for his alleged involvement in mobile phone thefts,” said a police officer.

Cuffs on one in arms licence racket case

A man who had allegedly used a fake arms licence to procure guns for security guards was arrested from Bardhaman on Sunday.

Ismail Mondal was part of a racket that the CID had unearthed last week and was allegedly involved in supplying firearms issued against fake gun licences to security guards hired by various agencies in and around Kolkata, CID sources said.

Police said two rifles procured without a valid licence were allegedly seized from Mondal, a resident of Memari in Bardhaman, around 85km northwest of Kolkata.
