An oncology unit was inaugurated at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Barasat on Saturday.

The hospital, which has been in operation for nine years, did not have any facility to treat cancer patients. An official of the hospital said an oncology OPD clinic will be open from Monday to Saturday.

There will be facilities to administer chemotherapy, said the official.

“We have started with a four-bed chemotherapy unit. Four persons can undergo chemotherapy simultaneously,” said the official.

“Since chemotherapy is a daycare procedure and the duration is different for different patients, we will be able to administer chemotherapy to more than one patient on each bed every day.”

Two senior doctors from hospitals run by the group will be present at the OPD clinic alternately with their teams, said the official.

“We hope patients from Barasat and neighbouring areas will benefit immensely as cancer care is now closer home,” said the official.

The hospital also has plans to start radiotherapy.
