“We raided Biwi’s house early on Wednesday. The house had expensive furniture and fittings,” an officer who was part of the team that raided Biwi’s house said.

Biwi is said to have told officers that she had bought a 43-inch LED television and a refrigerator, and set up a modular kitchen with the stolen money.

“Apart from that, Biwi has opened a fixed deposit account of more than Rs 90,000 with the money stolen from Karmakar’s house,” the officer said.

A Bidhannagar commissionerate officer said Karmakar, who lives in a Rishi View Housing Complex apartment, lodged a complaint with Eco Park police station on Tuesday.

He mentioned in the complaint that cash had been disappearing from his house on a regular basis since September.

“He said last year, too, Rs 18,000 had gone missing. When the family members confronted Biwi, she admitted her fault, after which the family decided not to press the matter further,” the officer said.

Another officer said Biwi used to get a salary of Rs 6,500 from the Karmakar household, where she had worked for four years.
