A 1.5km-long flyover connecting New Town to Sector V is almost ready and is expected to be opened to traffic in a few months, said an official at Hidco, which is in charge of the project.

The flyover, which goes over the Kestopur canal (Salt Lake), stretches from Balaka Abasan in New Town’s Action Area I till Panache Housing Complex on Godrej Waterside Ring Road, near Sector V.

This flyover is a key part of an alternative route to New Town from Salt Lake and Sector V. “The four-lane flyover is nearly complete. Now, the asphalt surface on the carriageway is being laid,” said an official.

In order to get on to the flyover, motorists headed to New Town from Sector V have to take a right turn at the Technopolis signal and drive straight for around 400m.

Then they have to turn left to access the Ring Road and head straight for around 800m before taking another left turn. Those headed towards Salt Lake from New Town will have to reach Balaka Abasan, from where they can access the flyover.

Snarls are commonplace on Major Arterial Road, which is now the main link between New Town and Salt Lake on one end and the airport on the other.

The new route is expected to cut down travel time considerably, a Hidco official said.
