A 48-year-old man from Nagerbazar in northeast Kolkata has been arrested for allegedly taking a loan of Rs 15 lakh from a non-banking financial firm by forging documents of a namesake, police said.

Arijit Mukherjee, who was arrested from his house in Nagerbazar on Thursday night, had allegedly used identity documents of a resident of Hooghly district and used them to get a loan of Rs 15 lakh, an officer in the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

The officer said the alleged fraud came to light when Hooghly’s Arijit Mukherjee went to purchase an electronic item from a store and opted for EMI payment.

He approached a representative of the same non-banking financial firm and produced his identity documents. The representative logged into the system and found that Mukherjee was not eligible for a loan because his CIBIL score was too low.

“Mukherjee learnt that a loan of Rs 15 lakh had been sanctioned in his name,” the officer said.

Realising he had been duped, Mukherjee lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police station in Salt Lake.
