A 67-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son were found dead in their Sodepur apartment, 17km north of Calcutta, on Friday evening. The son was found hanging from the ceiling with a towel and the mother lying on the floor.

No suicide note was found in the apartment, near Sodepur railway station at Keya More, but preliminary inquiry suggested the two committed suicide. Senior officers of Khardah police station have drawn up an unnatural death case.

Residents said the two had lived in the apartment for several years. Kamana’s husband passed away a few years back and Dattatreya was an engineer.

“Around 7pm, I heard a noise and stepped out to find a boy and a girl trying to break open the door of the apartment,” said a neighbour. “When I asked what they were doing, he said Dattatreya had called a while back saying he wouldn’t live anymore and they were trying to break in.”

Dattatreya’s friends called a passerby and broke the door to find the boy hanging and his mother lying motionless on the floor.

Kamana and her son used to keep to themselves, the police have learnt.

The police are talking to Dattatreya’s friends to find out if he had been under any stress.
