Two bike-borne men allegedly pushed a 63-year-old woman to the ground and snatched her purse while she was on her morning walk in front of the senior citizens’ park near the Kolkata Gate in New Town on Friday.

Tandra Ghosh, a resident of BA Block, said like every day, she had stepped out around 5.45am and was walking near Smart Street in front of Swapna Bhor, the senior citizens’ park, a 12-minute walk from her house.

“I was walking and there were other morning walkers as well when I heard a motorcycle’s engine. Suddenly, someone pushed me hard from behind. Before I could realise anything, a man pulled at my purse and snatched it away,” she said.

Tandra lives with her husband Sabyasachi Ghosh, who retired as a senior official of the election commission, and daughter Sudeshna.

The Telegraph had reported on October 25 that two bike-borne men had snatched a gold chain from a woman in her early 60s who was out on her morning walk in Salt Lake’s EE Block.

On Friday, as Tandra barely managed to keep her balance, the men sped away towards the Kolkata Gate.

Other morning walkers rushed to Tandra’s aid and alerted New Town police station.

“I told the officers what had happened and they asked me for the registration plate of the bike but I had not managed to spot the number of the two-wheeler,” said Tandra.

No one was arrested till late on Friday.

“This happened very close to Major Arterial Road (MAR) at a time when many elderly people go out for a walk. The police must ramp up their vigil and intensify patrolling at all times,” said Samaresh Das, chairman, New Town News and Forum (NTFN), a residents’ body.
