Monsoon winds entered Kolkata and many parts of south Bengal on Saturday. The overcast sky and the scattered rainfall turned the weather pleasant. The Alipore Met office said that light to moderate rain was expected in the next couple of days.
The Met office said that monsoon will cover more regions of the south Bengal in the next two to three days.
“The southwest monsoon winds have advanced in many parts of south Bengal including Kolkata,” said G.K. Das, the director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Calcutta, on Saturday.
“Light to moderate rain is expected in the next couple of days. There is a possibility of heavy rain after Monday owing to a trough of low pressure,” added Das.
The Alipore Met office recorded 6.8mm rain between Friday and Saturday evenings.
Though the rain was scattered, the weather since Saturday morning was a much-needed relief from days of heat. Das said the humidity was high towards the morning, which is why it rained in the morning.
A Salt Lake resident said he did not have to switch on the air-conditioner at his home for much of Saturday. He could not remember whether there was any day this summer when he did not switch on the air-conditioner in the afternoon.
The maximum temperature recorded on Saturday was 31.1 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Saturday’s minimum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal.
An official of IMD Kolkata said that owing to the overcast sky and rain in the morning, the real feel temperature was much lower than what people experienced in the last several days. Real feel temperature is a measurement of how hot or cold it feels on a day.
Das said that the southwest monsoon winds had not covered Odisha till Saturday, a factor that suggests that there is unlikely to be heavy rain in Kolkatain the next couple of days at least.Monsoon had, however, covered all of north Bengal by Friday.
Eastern parts of the northern limit of monsoon (NLM) was passing through Haldia, Burdwan , Dumka, Banka and Motihari on Saturday.
