Monsoon has retreated from north Bengal and should be gone from Kolkata over the next couple of days, said a Met official.

“The monsoon withdrawal line reached north Bengal via Bihar and Jharkhand. On Saturday, the southwest monsoon’s withdrawal from north Bengal was complete. By October 18, monsoon is expected to retreat from Kolkata and the rest of south Bengal,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

The usual date of the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from south Bengal is October 12.

Last Sunday, Das had told The Telegraph that the signs of monsoon withdrawal were still not strong. But the situation is changing now, he said on Saturday.

“The southwesterly winds have lost intensity. Northerly winds are entering south Bengal. The next three to four days are likely to be dry in south Bengal. The moisture level in the atmosphere is on the decline,” said Das.
