The monsoon covered the whole of Bengal on Friday, the Met office said.
In Kolkata, the day was marked by inconsistent rain, like the past couple of days.
The next few days are likely to be rainy in the city. But the volume and spread of the showers will depend on the movement of a system over the Bay of Bengal, which is now off the Odisha and Andhra coast.
“The southwest monsoon entered the remaining parts of Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram and East and West Midnapore on Friday. In doing so, the monsoon has covered the entire Bengal,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.
On Friday, several areas in Kolkata received rain in the afternoon. But the rain was not uniform. Around 2.30pm, the area in front of the Eden Gardens was dry. But less than 3km away, DL Khan Road in Alipore was getting drenched.
A cyclonic circulation over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is behind the current showers, said Met officials.
The system is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area and move towards land over the next 48 hours. It is also expected to help in propelling the monsoon into Bihar and adjoining areas.
“If the system moves closer to the Odisha coast, it will have some impact on Kolkata and adjoining areas. But the impact on these areas will be much more if the system moves towards Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic Bengal,” said Das.
