A book fair is being held at the FD Block community centre in Salt Lake where several publishing houses have participated.

This is the first time that a “small-scale” book fair has been organised by The Publishers and Booksellers Guild the organisers of the International Kolkata Book Fair.

The fair that is on from Friday drew a sizeable crowd on Saturday evening despite there being no big ticket posters or hoardings announcing that a book fair was on in a Salt Lake block.

Tanushree Sarkar, a software engineer, who dropped in with her mother said that it felt good to have so many books at her doorstep.

“Although this is a small fair but it has all the makings of a proper book fair. The range of books available here in both English and Bengali really surprised me,” said Sarkar who bought several books before heading back to her FD block home.

Tridib Kumar Chattopadhyay, the secretary of the guild, said that these fairs are aimed at “bringing books closer to people”.

“We have got a very good response in terms of sales here,” said Chattopadhyay.

The next fair is lined up at Urbana that is scheduled to take place in August.
