Two women, from Metiabruz in the west and Kasba in the south, were at Esplanade in central Kolkata on Thursday to listen to Mamata Banerjee.

Both are Trinamul supporters but are not into active politics. Colleagues Shakuntala Roy, 35, and Tabassum Ara, 30, had turned up only to see chief minister Mamata Banerjee up close. This was their first visit to any political rally.

“We are here only to see Mamata Banerjee. We have never seen her from close quarters,” said Shakuntala, a resident of Kasba.

But the two friends, who decided on Wednesday to attend the rally, could not reach anywhere near the dais.

“We could only reach till Metro cinema. The police had put up barricades there probably because the venue had already been overcrowded. I don’t know when we will again get a chance to see Mamata,” said Shakuntala.

Tabassum, from Metiabruz, said: “I have never attended a political rally. We are supporters of Trinamul but we are not party workers.”

The two, however, stood out in the crowd as they were among the handful of people who wore masks. “Everyone must take care of their health,” said Shakuntala.
