When the hospital authorities came to know about the alleged transaction and confronted the man, he is said to have fled.

AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria, where the alleged incident happened on Monday, reported the matter to the police on Tuesday.

According to officers of Rabindra Sarobar police station where the matter has been reported, Chowdhury had taken Rs 4 lakh from the family of a patient who was admitted in the hospital since the first week of January.

“The family was told that if they paid him Rs 4 lakh, their bill would be waived off. Unfortunately, the family fell into the trap. When the hospital officials came to know about it, they confronted the man. Initially he dropped the name of an influential leader but when he was told that police were coming for him, he fled from the hospital,” said an officer.

An official of AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria told The Telegraph: “There are instances where the patient party finds it difficult to pay the bill, but such an incident where a fraud cheats the patient party right inside the hospital and also tries to defraud the hospital is new.”

The official added that the CCTV footage that shows the man taking money from the family would be handed over to the police on Wednesday.

An officer said they were collecting CCTV footage from outside the hospital building to check the possible direction or the details of the vehicle in which the man had fled.

No one was arrested till Tuesday night.
