A man in his late 30s was arrested early on Sunday for allegedly trying to forcibly enter an apartment in Behala in southwest Kolkata, where a woman lives alone.

The man, who police identified as Amit Debnath, was allegedly trying to break open the main door of the apartment on the first floor of a two-storeyed building on Roy Bahadur Road around 5am.

The woman dialled 100, the police helpline. The call reached the police control room in Lalbazar and officers immediately alerted Behala police station. A police team reached the house and arrested the man, who by then had taken shelter on the terrace.

“We are yet to find out whether he has any criminal antecedence or not,” said an officer of Behala police station.

The woman told investigators that she woke up to the sound of heavy kicking on the main door of her apartment around 5am. When the woman wanted to know who was on the other side, the man allegedly abused her and demanded that the door be opened immediately.

The woman told the police that she realised that the man was the one who had been stalking her for some time.

“The man told us that his pet cat had slipped out of his house and reached the woman's first-floor apartment. He had gone to rescue the cat,” the officer said.
