Movement of vehicles will be restricted along a number of roads leading to ghats along the Hooghly on Wednesday on the occasion of Mahalaya. The Circular Railway service will remain suspended throughout the day.

Kolkata police said heavy vehicles would be restricted from 4am to 4pm on Wednesday to help people heading for the ghats to perform tarpan. Some of the restrictions announced by Kolkata police:

  • No goods vehicles will be allowed on Strand Road and St Georges Gate Road, between Raja Woodmunt Street and Hastings crossings, from 4am to 4pm
  • No goods vehicles will be allowed to move north from the following road intersections

➼ Rabindra Sarani and KK Tagore Street crossing (near Ganesh Talkies)
➼ Vivekananda Road and CR Avenue crossing (near Girish Park)
➼ Grey Street and BK Paul Avenue crossing
➼ Maniktala crossing
➼ Aurobinda Sarani and Raja Dinendra Street crossing
➼ Galiff Street and Bidhan Sarani crossing
➼ Strand Road and KK Tagore Street crossing
➼ Cossipore Road and Khagen Chatterjee Road crossing
➼ Khirod Bidhya Binod Avenue and Galiff Street crossing

  • No goods vehicle will be allowed on BT Road, Khagen Chatterjee Road, Cossipore Road, Strand Bank Road, Rabindra Sarani (from Khirod Bidhya Binod Avenue to BK Paul Avenue), Sovabazar Street and Nimtala Ghat Street
  • No vehicle will be allowed to move south from the crossing of Kiran Shankar Roy Road and Strand Road. Buses headed for Babughat will be restricted and diverted from the crossing of Hare Street and Strand Road
  • Goods vehicles may be diverted from any arterial road as and when required to prevent them moving north along BT Road, Cossipore Road, Strand Bank Road, Strand Road, St Georges Gate Road, especially nearly the bathing ghats, from 4am to 4pm
  • All vehicles, except those carrying devotees, will be diverted from Clyde Road-Commissariat Road crossing and Clyde Road-St Georges Gate Road crossing towards Kidderpore Road and then Vidyasagar Setu n Auckland Road will be closed from Government Place West for all types of vehicles.
  • Kingsway will be closed for all types of vehicles from Plassey Gate Road crossing, except vehicles carrying devotees
  • If required, vehicles in both directions will not be allowed on Strand Road between Auckland Road crossing and Commissariat Road crossing, except the ones carrying devotees
  • No vehicle headed towards the Hooghly will be allowed on Sovabazar Street from Rabindra Sarani crossing up to Strand Bank Road crossing
