They broke the tinned roof and the door, took out cartons of liquor and fled.

“We suspect they had brought a small pick-up van to take away the liquor. Investigations have started,” said an officer of Balurghat police station.

Some residents of the area spotted on Sunday morning that the shop had been burgled and alerted the police.

The owners of the shop, Prasenjit Deb and Pradip Dam, reached the spot.

“A preliminary estimate reveals that IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) and country liquor worth around 15 lakh were stolen. The burglars also took away an inverter and the battery from the shop,” said Deb.

On Saturday, the owners closed the shop at 10pm.

“We have a night guard who didn’t turn up yesterday because of some family problems. We hope the police will track down those who burgled the shop and took away liquor,” Deb said.
