Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the sub-Himalayan districts of north Bengal till Wednesday and may lead to landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the Met department said on Sunday.

Downpour is likely in the northern part of the state owing to strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur districts till September 12.

The weather office has also warned of rise in water levels of rivers in the region.

At least eight people died after being washed away by flash floods in Jalpaiguri district’s Mal river during Durga idol immersion on Dashami. Residents said the water level had risen so high that many of the trucks and pick-up vans deloyed by the clubs to carry the idols got stuck in the river.

The flash floods might have been caused by heavy rain in Bhutan from where the Mal originates.
