Oxygen kits mandatory in Sikkim vehicles
The Sikkim government has made it mandatory for all vehicles registered in the state to carry oxygen supply kits or canisters from July 1 to avert health hazards for passengers at high altitudes.
Sikkim has a number of popular tourist destinations -- mostly in the north of the state -- which are located above 10,000ft. They include Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar lake and Yumthang
Incidents of tourists, especially senior citizens and children, facing breathing problems were reported from Tsomgo (Chhangu) Lake, Nathu-la and Baba Mandir which are in the east of the Himalayan state.
VC ordinance
A petition was filed in the high court on Wednesday to challenge an ordinance issued by the state government for the selection of vice-chancellors of universities across the state. Through the ordinance, the state is trying to set up five-member search committees for shortlisting candidates for the VC s post in each university.
According to an existing rule, a search committee has to have three members. Petitioner advocate Sushmita Saha Roy alleged the state is trying to select “Yes Men” through the ordinance. The petition is likely to come up for hearing on June 12.
