UFO? No, possibly a missile

An unidentified object with a trail of light that appeared to be a cosmic phenomenon was visible in the sky in Kolkata and several districts on Thursday evening. The light, visible for a few minutes after 5.40pm, had the Internet buzzing. UFO theories started doing the rounds, as did speculations about a possible meteorite.

Subhabrata Datta, curator of MP Birla Planetarium, said what Kolkatans saw was “in all likelihood” the light trail of a missile test-fired from the Odisha coast. “The DRDO test-fired AGNI V, an intercontinental ballistic missile, from an island off the Odisha coast, on Thursday,” said Datta.

Calcutta High Court allows rally on December 19

Justice Jay Sengupta of Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed Kolkata police to allow the joint committee of four associations demanding jobs in schools to organise a rally on December 19 from Sealdah to Esplanade between noon and 4pm. The committee moved the court after being denied permission for the rally by the police.
