A taxi driver returned a gold chain worth more than Rs 25,000 to a passenger who had boarded his cab from the Dum Dum airport’s pre-paid taxi booth counter to Sukantanagar near Chingrighata in northeast Kolkata.

Shaktipada Choudhury had boarded Rambrich Ray’s pre-paid taxi on Thursday afternoon that he booked to his Sukantanagar house, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said. After reaching his house and settling down Choudhury realised that his gold chain was missing.

“Choudhury initially looked through his belongings. But when he could not find it, he called the airport pre-paid booking helpline number mentioned on the pre-paid slip that is issued after passeng er books a taxi,” the police officer said.

After receiving a call, personnel manning the helpline managed to find Ray’s number and called him up. Ray, who was off-duty at that time and had taken his wife to visit a doctor in the taxi, looked for the chain inside his vehicle and found it on the rear seat.

“He then called us to inform us that he had found the chain and will drop it at the airport traffic guard. Our men also called Choudhury and asked him to be there,” said the officer.

Choudhury collected the chain from the airport traffic guard office.

Ray, in his late 50s, was later facilitated with a letter of appreciation as well as a cash reward by Gaurav Sharma, commissioner of the Bidhannagar commissionerate, at his office as a token of appreciation for his honesty.
