DPS, Ruby Park
Students of DPS, Ruby Park, marked the 75th Independence Day with a special assembly on August 15. Brigadier Yadvendra Singh Sirohi, dean and deputy commandant of the Command Hospital, Eastern Command (Calcutta), was the chief guest at the flag hoisting.
A cultural programme followed with a school choir performance. Principal Joyoti Chaudhuri welcomed the guests. To soak in the spirit of giving, students of DPS, Ruby Park, donated oral and literacy kits to NGO Harinavi Srijan. The Bulbuls (the junior division of Guides) performed patriotic songs. A multilingual skit was also staged on the diversity of our nation. Finally, a dance medley took the breath of the audience away
“Throughout the year, we organised events to commemorate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. It was wonderful to see the enthusiastic students on stage again. The students also took part in a social service drive and the Red Road march,” said the principal.
Shri Shikshayatan School
The Shikshayatan Foundation celebrated Independence Day in style. The flag hoisting took place on August 13.
The entrance to the school was adorned with Tricolour lights, representing the national flag. The event started at 9am with the march-past by the student council members.
The foundation’s secretary-general Bratati Bhattacharyya hoisted the Tricolour. The national anthem followed. Bhattacharyya addressed the gathering, appealing to the nationalistic spirit of all and urging everyone to take pride in being an Indian and fulfilling one’s duty with responsibility. She also emphasised the role of the youth today.
This was followed by a musical presentation by the school choir. Principal Sangeeta Tandon spoke about the sacrifices made by the martyrs and patriots.
The programme ended with Rabindrasangeet.
“After two years, we had this physical gathering with students and the teaching faculty. The premises were decorated with Tricolour lights. We reflected on how each one of us in our capacity has contributed towards the nation.... and that it must be a continuous process,” said Bhattacharyya.
“Faculty and students of Shri Shikshayatan School and Shri Shikshayatan College once again got together to celebrate Independence Day on the school premises. The day was very special for all of us. The school was beautifully decorated and every student had a Tricolour in their hands. Shoe formation by the guide patrol, march-past by students and a short cultural programme made the day joyous,” said principal Sangeeta Tandon.
St John’s Diocesan Girls’ Higher Secondary School
Students of St John’s Diocesan Girls’ Higher Secondary School celebrated Independence Day with a cultural programme.
The day began with flag hoisting and march-past. Patriotic songs were sung, and a drill performance was presented. The students paid homage to the brave martyrs, dividing the presentation into pre and post-Independence eras.
“The students paid homage to the brave martyrs through skits, songs and dance. India’s achievements in the past 75 years were also highlighted. A special tribute was paid to our illustrious alumna Beena Das, a revolutionary in pre-Independent India,” said principal Snigdha Gain.
Sri Sri Academy
Dressed in their traditional best, students of Sri Sri Academy took part in cultural performances, discussed ways to keep the country clean and recited poems on Independence Day.
Children from Class I to V performed patriotic songs such as I love my country India and Nanha munna rahi hoon on the school premises on August 12.
They were also taught how to make the Tricolour and educated about various national symbols.
On August 15, the students of Classes VI to XII took a pledge to be more responsible citizens in future. They also spread the message of personal well-being through physical exercise, recycling waste, planting trees and helping others. Dressed in white ethnic clothes, the students took part in the flag hoisting and sang patriotic songs and recited poems in Hindi. Classes VI to VIII presented a dance performance.
A special programme, Ami Subhash Bolchi, was performed by the Bengali department students of Classes X and XII.
“It is very important to celebrate Independence Day by iterating all the values which exemplify the true spirit of democracy. The students and teachers worked hard for many weeks to put up this passionate show of patriotism,” said principal Suvina Shunglu.
Calcutta Public School, Barasat
Students of Calcutta Public school, Barasat, revisited some landmark events of the freedom struggle for their Independence Day celebrations on August 16.
The programme began with the lamp-lighting, followed by a dance performance and an enactment of the 1857 revolt against the British Raj.
The students also dressed up as freedom fighters and enacted events such as the Jalianwalla Bagh massacre, Non-Cooperation Movement, Dandi March and India’s partition.
A medley of patriotic songs and a dance were also performed by the students. The children paid tribute to the Indian Army and woman sports stars and the first female doctor, Kadambini Ganguly.
“It filled me with pride to see the little ones deliver such great performances. I would like to congratulate all the students and faculty for putting up a spectacular show,” said principal Abhilasha Das.
Bidya Bharati Girls’ High School
Students of Bidya Bharati Girls’ High School presented a virtual collage of performances to celebrate 75 years of freedom. They also had a formal flag-hoisting ceremony in school. Students sang, danced and drew for the virtual programme. It started with the patriotic song Karar oi louho kopat, with Abhideepa Saha of Class VII on the violin. Girls from Class VIII sang Vande mataram. Tanima Sadhukhan of Class X recited the famous Bengali poem Swadhinota. “The students worked hard for two weeks. Their artwork was especially beautiful. This year we paid tribute to Aurobindo Ghose and the women warriors,” said principal Sharmistha Banerjee.

Asian International School
Cultural performances, speeches and felicitation of board exam toppers were the highlights of Asian International School’s Independence Day celebration. The theme was Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the event was held on the school premises.
Aritra Gupta of Class X and Upasana Adhikary of Class XII were the anchors of the event.
The chief guests were Arpita Mukherji, former principal of Scottish Church College, and Shiv Dayal Sharma, chairman of Asian International School.
The school’s director Alok Sharma and principal Vijaylaxmi Kumar addressed the students after the flag hoisting.
Students of Classes II to V presented a dance performance followed by a speech by headmistress Simran Sanghera on freedom fighters.
“We instilled in our pupils the importance of working hard, winning and learning. India is a land of innovations and our children have a huge contribution to make. The celebrations were boosted with the felicitation of school toppers in their board examinations,” said the principal.
The Primary section conducted a special assembly on August 11. On the occasion, the young ones paid tribute to the freedom fighters as part of their morning prayers.
