Even as Puja organisers have started preparations for the September 1 rally to initiate Durga Puja celebrations, Kolkata police have issued special orders to ensure smooth traffic movement. According to police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, restrictions have been imposed on parking on certain roads and a time schedule for traffic to ply on Red Road has been issued.
According to the order, no vehicle will ply on Red Road between August 30, 11pm and August 31, 4am. The restriction has been imposed again on August 31, between 11pm and 6am on September 1.
“On September 1, Red Road might remain closed for vehicles depending on the congestion,” said a traffic police officer. On September 2, Red Road will be closed for traffic between 12.30am and 5am.
“The movement of all goods vehicles, except the ones carrying emergency items, have been restricted on September 1 in Kolkata between 8am and 8pm,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, there have been “curbs” on trams, carts and vehicles on 21 roads in the city on September 1. The movement might be completely restricted or diverted according to the situation. The thoroughfares where these restrictions will be imposed include, Bhupen Bose Avenue, CR Avenue, JM Avenue, KK Tagore Street, MG Road, BB Ganguly Street, GC Avenue, SN Banerjee Road, Lenin Sarani, JL Nehru Road, RR Avenue, Mayo Road, Kidderpore Road, Esplanade Row and Esplanade Ram among others.
“September 1 being a weekday, we are expecting heavy traffic flow and congestion in some parts in central Kolkata, especially after 2pm, when the rally commences,” said the officer.

Meanwhile, puja organisers have started preparing for the rally. “It will start from Jorasanko in the afternoon and is likely to terminate at Red Road or Esplanade. Besides the Puja organisers, there will be a huge gathering of people from all walks of life. Dhakis and Bangla Band singers are also expected to participate,” said Saswata Basu, secretary of the Forum for Durgotsab.
More than 2,500 Puja organisers from Kolkata, Salt Lake and both the North and South 24-Parganas are expected to take part in the rally. The organisers have also lined up some cultural events.
