Kolkata police won the hearts of animal lovers by rescuing a stray dog trapped in a deserted building in the Survey Park area in south Kolkata on Wednesday.

The cops shared the details and a video of the rescue operation in a post on the force’s official page.

A resident of the Canal Road area had been hearing the dog bark for a few days. But he could not figure out the canine’s whereabouts. Finally, he realised that the dog was trapped in a locked building in the neighbourhood.

He could see the trapped canine scurrying from one window to another, yelping desperately for help.

Not sure who could help, the samaritan got in touch with the office of Arijit Sinha, deputy commissioner, Kolkata Traffic Police. The deputy commissioner instructed inspector Sanjay Singh to look into the matter.

Inspector Singh reached the location with a team but could not enter as the door was locked.

The only inhabitant of the building, the caretaker, was on leave and had gone away for a few days.

Determined not to give up, inspector Singh kept looking for a way into the building. He found a small opening, through which one of his team members slid inside.

And the stray was brought outside through the same opening.

This act of kindness has garnered much adulation and praise for the force on social media.

The post about the rescue drew hundreds of likes and comments. One person shared the post with the following note: “Having lived in a few Indian cities and having stayed for long durations in many for work, I have not come across such a police force.”
