Kolkata police prosecute 24 motorists for failing alcohol test

Highest number of prosecutions for drink driving in past few weeks was reported last Friday when 34 motorists were booked for the offence

Twenty-four people were prosecuted across the city for failing the alcohol test on Saturday night, compared to a daily average of 16 people throughout last week.

Traffic police sources said the highest number of prosecutions for driving in a state of intoxication in the past few weeks was reported last Friday when 34 motorists were booked for the offence. After that, this Saturday recorded the highest number of reported offences.

Of the 24 cases, three each were reported from Park Street, Theatre Road, Park Circus crossing areas and Kasba and two each from Tiljala, Jadavpur, Ultadanga and JL Nehru Road and Maidan on Saturday night.

According to Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a person can be imprisoned for up to six months or asked to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 if alcohol exceeding 30mg per 100ml is detected in the bloodstream through a breathalyser.

Second and subsequent offences can lead to an imprisonment for two years or a fine of Rs 3,000.
