On Wednesday, Kolkata Traffic Police issued a traffic notification undersigned by police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal imposing one-way traffic restrictions on Canal South Road and Chaulputty Road. The move, the notification, said was to provide safe and uninterrupted passage to vehicular traffic in Beliaghata.

Traffic would flow in an east to west direction on the stretch of Canal South Road between EM Bypass and Ram Krishna Naskar Lane (Cement Bridge) round the clock. Chaulpatty Road, on the other hand, would provide passage to vehicles in the west to east direction on the same stretch on all days.

The only vehicles exempted from the one-way traffic rule would be those belonging to the Kolkata police force attending urgent calls, fire apparatus belonging to the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services proceeding to attend to fires and public ambulances carrying patients.

The order came into force with immediate effect.

The decision has been necessitated by the blocking off of a section of Salt Lake Bypass because of Metro construction work and the road space has been reduced significantly.
